tonight i met jen lancaster, and i still can’t believe it!!! seriously, i almost think i’m dreamin’!!! (no, SRSLY, i was even all ‘pinch me!’ …and she did!)
jeanne introduced me to ms. lancaster earlier in the year, and i devoured her 2nd book and immediately fell in love. so funny, so witty, so real. plus, you have to love anyone with a healthy dislike of all things squirrel (squirrels are fucking evil, ok??). even though i did it a bit out of order, i read her first two books and counted down the days until book #3 was out.
this june, she released her third ‘memoir’ Such A Pretty Fat: One Narcissist’s Quest To Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass LookBig, Or Why Pie is Not The Answer. i got it, i devoured it, i LOVED it. honestly, i think i’m going to have to read it all over again after tonight’s shindig because i’m reminded of just how hilarious and awesome it is.
coinciding with the release of the new book is a book tour (hooray!) and while the first phase totally skipped over the east coast, phase 2 included boston (double-hooray!). thus, jeanne and i took off work early and went downtown to the borders for a jen lancaster book event.
so first off, getting out of the office at a decent time to make it downtown was kind of miraculous in and of itself. and after suffering on the god damned subway (god, i hate the subway) through sweltering temperatures and douchebag crowds we make it out to copley square and head down to borders. right as we’re getting to the corner that the bookstore is on, a town car whips around the corner and comes pretty damn close to nudging into jeanne. and who should be in that town car? why jen-fucking-lancaster, of course!
we got there right as she did! how fucking awesome is that. i said hi, and squealed, and squeed and generally twittered in excited disbelief. and she.touched.me! eep! so unreal, and awesome.
in the store, we settled in with the huge crowd and awaited the start of the festivities. honestly, right off the bat it was better than any other book reading i’ve ever been to because a.) jen is awesome and b.) it was a really comfortable (well, not temperature-wise) setting. when i went to the david sedaris book reading/signing we were all cordoned off lest someone just leap out and frantically attack him with excitement (i would not! seriously!) and we didn’t get to ask questions or talk to him or actually get our books signed in person. there was this wonky system where you filled out a form and they KEPT YOUR BOOK and you had to go back (presuming he actually signed it himself and not some minion) downtown to pick it up. uber.fucking.lame. but, as jen said ‘david sedaris is a god’ so it was worth it.
this…this was unexpected in its awesomeness. not only did i get to have one-on-one talk time with jen BEFORE everything even started, but holy god she’s hilarious! she read from the book, and graced us with a few truly hilarious gems as well. plus there was a Q&A and really, she’s just so approachable and funny and friendly that you aren’t overwhelmed by anything other than “omg i wish she were my bff!”
plus, there’s another book on the way.
PLUS, she totally signed my book right then and there (the line wasn’t even that bad, and we weren’t rushed). PLUS, she totally touched me! PLUS i got pictures*!
i still can’t believe i met (and actually talked to!) jen lancaster!
best.night.ever.
NOTE: erm…according to my iphoto i got like 60+ fucking pictures…oh my!
