this weekend, the boy and i ventured out to new hampshire to check out the classic arcade museum — aka funspot — in laconia.
the drive was longer than expected, but nicely scenic. we’ve been pretty run down over the last week so saturday was pretty much making it to new hampshire and then passing the fuck out. our hotel was awesome: a surprisingly good deal, every room had it’s own private balcony or patio, 2 pools, a jacuzzi and a spiffy little pub right across the street. i wish we could’ve spent more time there. on the whole, the entire lakeside area was a nice change of pace. the weather was gorgeous and everything was calm and peaceful.
then we hit up the arcade…
the motherfucking to end all arcades. practically every game you could imagine as far as the eye could see, classic gaming consoles and racing games and sega and nes and atari and two-player pong…oh, it was glorious. to top it off, more skee-ball and slot machines and air hockey and bowling than you can shake a fist at.
i must’ve played skee-ball for like 3 hours, and it was fuckign magnificent. skee-ball is the greatest game on earth, and i rock it so hard without even trying. plus, it is fun as hell.
also, apparently this portion of new hampshire is classic car and harley davidson central. if it weren’t out-in-the-middle-of-nowheresville, i would want to live there.
the drive is about 2 hours each way, and that takes a lot out of you when you consider traffic in new england, but all in all, i think it was totally worth it. sometimes it’s so nice to just get away, even if it’s for a mere weekend.
plus, when you throw in classic arcade gaming, skee-ball and a detour to dairy queen? not a bad way to spend your day.
