so i had to scurry out and get the new Institute album as soon as it was released yesterday. just like the crazed little fangirl i am. and god bless newbury comics, it was fuckin’ cheap as all hell (which of course, is bad for NC but good for me). it almost seems wrong to pay $7.99 for a new release CD, but then again, fuck yeah! long gone are the days when my younger, stupider self would save to spend $15.99 or more on a CD.
anyway…back to the important stuff. distort yourself, upon first listen-through is hella good. it does have a lot of old-school bush feel to it, and of course there’s gavin’s voice (yum) but i quite like it. it’s a bit harder, and well-paced throughout. chris — new guitarist from helmet — adds a richer tone to the whole thing, also: he fucking rocks.
“bullet-proof” skin is the current single, and while it does rock hardcore and i already find myself absentmindedly humming the melody at work and stuff, it is not my favorite track of the whole album. (which is not to say i don’t like it, because i do)
seeing the institute live really got me fired up for the album…and already i can pick out songs and be like “OMG WTF LOL!!! i TOTALLY heard them play that live! OMGZ0RZ!!!!11” (no, not really…) “when animals attack” is great — and not just because the idea of animal maulings is fucking awesome — really driving rock. also “wasteland” and “ambulances” are two of my favorites thus far. “ambulances” moreso because i really fucking love the guitar play in it. honestly, it’s kickass. also, that song has a delicious feel to it. thus, i’m in love.
additionally, “the heat of your love” is fucking great because it compares love to deep frying. and everyone knows that deep frying is how you show food that you love it, so word.
that’s it. i am full of glee…and of course, listening to my spiffy new CD.
