last night i heard from an old roommate, one i haven’t spoken to/seen in…well shit, years. it wasn’t bad, quite nice actually. just somewhat strange. one of those weird moments that hits you out of nowhere. i mean, i certainly wasn’t expecting it. and we parted ways on friendly terms — though my leaving the house was a nightmare that i’d sooner forget. it’s just, we didn’t really keep in touch.
and all of a sudden: boom! there he is. and he’s all chipper and friendly and whatnot — or as much as you can be online, i guess. and it’s kind of surreal. how do you effectively answer “what’s new in your life?” in a few lines, ya know? cuz like, and this might seem weird, but i’m such a completely different person from the kid that had the porch room in that dusty ol’ watertown house. like, i wouldn’t even know where to begin.
and mike, jesus! he has a kid! i mean, i had heard his girlie thing was expecting a few months after i moved, but wow. a kid. like, a live person that he is responsible for and shit — and that in & of itself is kind of a hilarious thought. mike was a total meathead that i’m sure would eat a child, but a loveable meathead. who, surprisingly, worked with children. deaf & blind children, in fact. additionally, his kid is nearly 2 years old. jesustits. so like, it’s been over 2 years. i couldn’t even begin to accurately categorize the last two years. or more…
mind-boggling.
and this is the dude that used to fry up a pound of bacon as a ‘snack’, all the while telling me the virtues of a well-shorn nutsack. this is the dude who totally trusted me with the keys to his explorer & provided the occasional solo-excursion out of the hellhole that is watertown (thanks, mike!). this is the dude that thought tony hawk was the greatest video game ever made. heh. and he’s stilll kickin’ around and such.
of course, the neatest thing out of our entire exchange is: i totally converted him & didn’t even know it. that’s right, boys & girls. mike p., my old roommate & dig dug partner, is a mac user now. proud owner of a shiny new imac, in fact.
spiffy.
