The Oakland Raiders enter their 47th season of professional football play when they host the San Diego Chargers as part of a unique double-header on ESPN’s Monday Night Football on Monday, September 11th. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland.
The game between these long-time AFC Western Division rivals will cap off the NFL’s Kickoff Weekend. Last season, the Raiders played in the first game of Week 1 on a Thursday night. This year, the Raiders will be showcased in the final game of Week 1.
The Raiders lead the all-time series against the Chargers 54-36-2, in a series that dates back to 1960 when the two teams were part of the American Football League and the Chargers were based in Los Angeles.
These two teams have played in some memorable Monday Night match-ups over the years including the Raiders 28-24 come-from-behind win in 1982. The Silver and Black erased a 24-0 halftime deficit to win that game. The Raiders also won a 33-30 thriller in 1984. This will be the first meeting between the Raiders and Chargers on Monday Night Football since 1996, when the Raiders defeated the Chargers 23-14 in San Diego.
