i have an addiction.
and i’m completely ok with it, i admit it freely and i will go one step further and say that i have no intentions of ever overcoming said addiction because i’m completely, 100% happy with the way things are. no doubt about it.
after reviewing what evidence i have on hand, it becomes quite clear that i am addicted to concerts…which is facilitated by my addiction to music. i must have music, i must always have it: in the car, on the bus, on the T, at the gym, in my room, on my ipod, in my head, always always always.
music…it keeps me going.
and concerts are, by far, one of the best means for musical immersion. even in new england where the crowds suck so unbelievably hard they should all just choke on a dick (i hate new england, i hate boston, i hope someday everything here gets eaten by a giant monster and/or flaming fireball of destruction). concerts are the only reason to live in boston, really. which is ironic because a shit ton of bands come through the area year after year and yet the crowds — in fact, the entire music scene here — really suck ass.
but enough about that…fuck new england, and that’s that. the boy was asking where in my top (10? 5?) is massive attack. because we saw them last night and despite how much the crowd sucked so unbelievably hard…they were possibly one of the most awesome things i’ve ever seen. ever heard. ever experienced! it was…unbelievable!
seriously, i want to have all of their babies and maybe not even eat them all. that’s how insanely awesome it was.
but when i stop to think about how many concerts i’ve been to…there’s just no way to know all the way. i know i have ticket stubs and such, but even i can’t remember off the top of my head yet, because there’s just too much. preliminary count leaves me at 38, but even so, just now i remembered that i saw no use for a name at the avalon when i lived in good ol’ #33 on comm. ave. that was what, october 2003-ish? maybe? and of course, there are circumstances surrounding that show i’d rather not re-live but that would put me at 39 concerts, with two more yet to see this year (so far)!!
i’ve been to shows in a bunch of cities and states, too…which i previously hadn’t realized. of course there’s the boston/cambridge/allston venue scene; but then there’s new york, manchester, lowell, amherst, rhode island, denver…jesus man. and there are about a million other shows i’d like to see as well. a shit ton of bands i’d like to be professional groupie for because they are that fucking awesome.
on the one hand, i’m surprised by how many shows i’ve been to…but on the other hand, it makes sense. the one thing i always strive to do is see live music, and so far, i think i’m doin’ an alright job about it.
but of course, i’m still checkin’ up on venues and diggin’ for upcoming tour dates because as with any addiction…i must feed mine.
