and so election day has passed and the house has gone to the dems. the senate is still up for grabs, but it does tend to lean slightly towards democrats. who knows, though, it could go either way at this point. i mean, the focal points right now are: montana & virginia…so…yeah.
more importantly, rumsfeld is resigning. which is to say, he’s running off with his tail between his legs lest the house begin investigating him. i don’t necessarily know that they’re going to replace him with anyone better per se, but it is definitely something that needed to be done like…two years ago. for sure. and luckily, there isn’t another rumsfeld readily lurking in the shadows. at least, i don’t believe so at this point.
massachusetts is all in an uproar over our “historic” election. who knows, maybe deval won’t suck…? i’ve heard conflicting things about him this whole time and the only concrete opinion i have is that his posters/signs/campaigners are god damned annoying bastards. so it’s the state’s first african-american governor in the history of statehood. so the fuck what? massachusetts has been a state for how long now? since fucking 1788…and it’s taken till motherfucking 2006 for a non-white to take the office? poor, poor show for a so-called liberal state. but whatever, that’s all moot now.
what is far more interesting, i think, is the election of a muslim in minnesota. generally speaking, very generally, rural areas and such tend to be a bit more conservative. a bit more leaning to the right. and as such, rural americans also tend to be very vehemently against anything “different”. which is just sad and wrong, and which is not to say “liberals” don’t do the same thing as well. but since the stupid bombing in new york & the even stupider war, there has been a frighteningly violent and upsetting backlash against muslims in this country. and that’s sad.
because it shouldn’t matter. at the end of the day, they’re still just people. deval patrick is not black, and keith ellison is not muslim…they are people. and we need more good people in office and such. i think a variety of different faiths & ethnicities in congress can only bring good, as we’ve suffered far too long under the yoke of a single demographic of old, conservative, christian-based, white men. and any change in that composition is going to be a change for the better in the end.
race, sex, ethnicity, etc. …none of this should matter when electing government officials. but the fact of the matter is: in this government, in this country, in this world…i think that’s all that matters.
anyway, gonna keep an eye on the senate a bit longer, i think.
