it is safe to say that i am excited.

last night, we actually saw some shark week programming that was not 100% completely assy and lame. in fact, i twas pretty damn cool. also, it provided yet another item on the list of “reasons to move to seattle”: six gill sharks swarm the waters at night. fuck yeah.
anyway, friday’s shark of the day is: the goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni).
size: up to 11 ft. / up to 350 lbs.
habitat: deep-water shark usually found near the sea bottom, at depths of around 250 m.
prey: deep-sea squid, crabs and fishes (NOT harmful to humans!!!)
fun facts: the goblin shark has a soft, flabby body, is colored bubblegum pink, and has a peculiar, blade-like snout overhanging long, highly protrusible jaws bristling with slender, fang-like teeth. the color is not due to pink pigments in the skin, however, but largely due to oxygenated blood in capillaries (tiny blood vessels) close to the body surface and visible through the translucent dermis.
you can check out more goblin shark awesomeness here.
i’m a bit disillusioned by shark week this year. why does it suck so hard? why so many “survivor” stories that are totally fucking with the notion that SHARKS DON’T EAT PEOPLE!?!?!? fuckers. also, discovery totally had some douche on there talking about how he shot a BEACHED AND GASPING-TO-DEATH shark in the head with a gun.
fuckers.
anyway, the shark of the day today is: the frilled shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus), sometimes called the frill shark.
size: 3.2-4.9 ft. (recorded up to 6.5 ft.)
habitat: southeast australia, new zealand, southeast asia, west africa, chile and the caribbean at depths between 160 and 660 feet
prey: cephalopods and sometimes other sharks (read: DOES NOT EAT PEOPLE!)
fun facts: the frilled shark’s mouth reveals 300 trident-shaped teeth aligned in 25 rows, and its jaws terminate at the back of its head rather than the bottom of its skull. also, due to it’s very thin and narrow physique, scientists initially suspected it was a type of eel. as it turns out, it is one of the most primative shark species still living today and has not changed significantly in millions of years.
many sharks undergo long gestation periods, but the frilled shark could actually break the world’s record. although research on this matter is still ongoing, scientists suspect frilled sharks could gestate for up to three and a half years! an average litter consists of six pups, many of which may not survive into adulthood; thus reproduction in the shark’s deep-sea habitat is slow at best. since temperatures are also colder at such levels, its metabolic cycle is thought to be equally sluggish.
again these sharks are fascinating and HARMLESS. see for yourself here.
today’s shark is extra special because it is extra rare: the megamouth shark (Megachasma pelagios). this uber-rare, deep water bad boy was discovered in 1976.
size: up to 18 ft. / up to 2,680 lbs.
habitat: pacific, atlantic & indian oceans anywhere from 150-1000 meters deep
prey: plankton & jellyfish
fun facts: the megamouth is so different from other shark lineages that it has been placed in its own family: Megachasmidae. very little is actually known about these sharks, as most specimens are either found stranded (already dead) or accidentally caught. there have been observations of megamouth sharks being attacked by sperm whales. they are not very good surface swimmers, slow and often confused. the megamouth has approximately fifty rows of very small and relatively numerous teeth on each jaw, but only three rows are functional. Females seem to present fewer teeth rows than males. upper and lower jaws have a symphyseal (where the two halves of the jaw meet) toothless space, but it is larger in upper jaw.
also, i must again note: this shark is HARMLESS TO HUMANS. and still bad ass.
oh yeah, it’s fuckin’ SHARK WEEK, yo! which, actually started on sunday, but we were busy rocking out and such, so there’s a bit of a delay.
the shark of the day is: greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus)
size: 21-24 ft. long / up to 2200 lbx.
habitat: depths of the northern atlantic waters, near greenland and iceland
prey: fish, seals, the occasional reindeer or polar bear (NOT CONSIDERED DANGEROUS TO HUMANS)
fun facts: the greenland shark is virtually blind, as parasites attach themselves to the shark’s corneas and eat the tissue. there are reports of greenland sharks being able to detect light, however. also, their flesh is toxic to everything but other greenland sharks. sometimes they go cannibal on each other. their lifespan may be as long as 200 years! that is mind-blowing.

has got to be the best damn thing i’ve stumbled upon in quite some time. all i want to do, all day, every day…is play this game.
i played a whole round through as the t-rex, and it was AWESOME.
so…everyone knows what a timesuck fucking facebook is, yes? and how the “apps” are complete retardation and usually will cock up a perfectly functional profile. usually you have to dodge quite a few application requests from everyone who is just now discovering facebook.
and then there are the notifications. so annoying. and for the most part you can turn them off, but some slip through the radar and so when you get one…it is completely lamesauce.
observe:Your friends have voted on your strengths and weaknesses:
STRENGTHS:
best mother (potential)
best shopping companion
most punctual
WEAKNESSES:
most athletic
most famous
bitch, please. this is laughable, i laugh and laugh. nobody who knows me would ever think that i would make a good mother. because they know just how rabidly i fucking hate children, and how much the idea of a parasite housing itself in my lady parts makes me twitch. caveat: i am an excellent shopping partner, though. really.
bottom line: BOREDOM, I HAZ IT.
maternal instinct? DO NOT WANT.
it is safe to say that i am excited.
